“Polluted Places” Nominations Sought

On November 15, 2003, Blacksmith Institute launched its “Polluted Places” initiative to provide financial resources and technical capacity to assist in the remediation of carefully selected polluted sites located throughout the developing world.

Polluted Places facilitates strong and enduring local partnerships with government agencies, NGOs and other groups that can take the lead in cleaning up dangerous toxic sites and assist in building a more permanent culture of ecological preservation and care.

Developed in association with faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Polluted Places has posted site nomination and assessment procedures at www.pollutedplaces.org. Polluted Places particularly seeks nominations of sites where there has been chronic and measurable health impacts on local communities, and where the package of resources that can be offered through financial and technical partners is likely to have a significant, positive impact. An Initial Site Assessment will be arranged for selected sites to evaluate in person the “fit” between existing local capacity and available Polluted Places resources.
