Interim Director of Programs
New Delhi, India
One Year Contract
About the Organization
The Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (Shakti), based in New Delhi, is a private foundation that works to catalyze policy development and implementation at the intersection of public health, energy security, and low carbon growth. Shakti’s mission is to create a secure, sustainable, and equitable future for India’s citizens by supporting policies and policy implementation that promote energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable energy. Shakti has been registered under Indian law as a Section 25 nonprofit organization (equivalent to a U.S. 501c3 nonprofit) under the Companies Act. The organization is governed by a national board of directors and partially funded by Indians. Shakti takes a strategic and targeted approach to grantmaking, convening local NGOs, experts, and academic researchers to help build and implement smart energy policies. Shakti is part of the ClimateWorks Network, a worldwide philanthropic network organized to win the battle against climate change. The ClimateWorks Network focuses on the nations and economic sectors with the highest potential for low carbon economic growth. A vital regional player in the network, Shakti is a new and growing organization composed of an engaged Board and dedicated staff members. The organization emphasizes building a collaborative work culture with personnel dedicated to the mission and values of Shakti.
Focus Areas of Work: Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation focuses on enacting policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the following areas:
* Energy efficiency for industry, buildings, appliances, vehicles, and demand-side management in the power sector.
* Green and sustainable cities, especially transit-oriented development and low-cost, sustainable transportation solutions.
* Rural energy services that provide cleaner and more reliable energy for cooking, lighting, and other household uses.
* Renewable energy, including implementation of India’s National Solar Mission.
Interim Director of Programs
Shakti seeks a committed, energetic, and experienced philanthropic leader to serve as the Interim Director of Programs. The Director will provide strategic grantmaking and management support to the organization’s growing program team, playing a leadership role in the startup phase of this new organization. Over the past four months, Shakti has grown from having one program director/officer to five (with two program associates heavily engaged in grantmaking). While each new staff member is an expert in his/her sector, most are engaging in grantmaking for the first time, in a country with little history of strategic grantmaking. The Interim Director of Programs will help staff develop and refine sector-based strategies and research, building internal capacity to engage in effective grantmaking and field building. These goals will be reached through training sessions and organizational development, as well as collaboration with program teams in the evaluation and administration of grants (i.e., meetings with potential grantees and partners). This one-year, contract assignment (with option for extension) is ideal for an innovative and analytical leader with a background in strategic grantmaking or management consulting, exposure to the environmental field, and interest or prior work experience in India. The position requires vision, excellent managerial skills, and a commitment to Shakti’s mission and approach.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Interim Director of Programs will:
* Manage strategy development for Shakti’s grant portfolio to accomplish targeted policy goals, including monitoring the results of collective and individual strategies and grants
* Facilitate strategy implementation for the region, helping to put in place work plans and mechanisms for tracking progress to ensure that regional program goals and milestones are achieved
* Solicit, review, and recommend strategic plans for funding; allocate and oversee budgets consistent with approved strategies
* Direct internal organizational systems for management of funding strategies, allocation, and evaluation
* Develop internal capacity for staff to successfully fulfill grant and partner requirements. For example, train staff on ClimateWorks internal methodologies, theory of change, and grantee reporting requirements
* Ensure timely completion of deliverables to partner funders, including proposals and reports
* Communicate regional strategies orally and in writing, ensuring documented strategies are accessible to all Shakti staff and the ClimateWorks Network
* Ensure that grant disbursement meets internal standards and satisfies legal, audit, and board requirements; ensure grant files are up to date and grant administration processes are followed
Professional Qualifications and Personal Attributes
The successful applicant will have the following minimum qualifications:
* 10 to 15 years work experience with 7+ years in a senior management role with experience managing teams, staff, and subcontractors
* Masters, or other graduate degree, required; degree in environmental science, engineering, or policy is strongly preferred
* Expertise in strategic grantmaking and field building, or comparable demonstrated analytical and managerial experience
* Climate or specific sectoral knowledgebase; power sector experience preferred
* Superb ability to manage teams, individuals, and projects
* Strong facilitation, convening, mediation, and negotiation skills; outstanding written and verbal communication skills
* An insightful, independent, analytic mind; intellectual curiosity
* Experience creating collaboration among networks of organizations or companies
* Exceptional work ethic, with the ability to lead and motivate others
* Experience working or living abroad, particularly in India or other developing countries
* Familiarity with ClimateWorks Network, approach, and strategy preferred
* Experience starting a new organization or working in a startup environment preferred
* Ability to work well in a team; enthusiastic personality and sense of humor
* Fluency in English required; Indian language skills a plus

July 2 - Director of Individual Giving (Tina@greengrants.org)
Global Greengrants Fund is a public foundation that supports grassroots activists and civil society organizations working to address environmental and social justice issues primarily in the global south. Greengrants believes that grassroots activism is key to solving seemingly intractable problems and halting cycles of poverty, powerlessness and environmental destruction. Working with an international network of advisors, we help overcome the barriers to grassroots grantmaking by identifying viable and effective organizations and providing small grants to these organizations at minimal cost. These grants offer hope and tap the energy of communities where other sources of support are scant at best, or completely unavailable. In 2009 we awarded approximately700 grants in over 100 countries.
Position Overview: In 2011, Greengrants has a fundraising goal of $5.2 million, 30% from annual individual “major” gifts, above $5,000. Individual giving is seen as the single greatest area for revenue expansion at Greengrants. The Director of Individual Giving will have primary responsibility for the development and implementation of a strategic individual gifts program that includes major gifts, annual fund gifts, donor services and programming, and aid in the strategic development of individual giving communications. The position will have primary solicitation responsibility for a geographically focused portfolio of donors, and will also supervise two Donor Relation Managers who each maintain portfolios of donors and aid in the development and execution of donor programming.
