Other automotive air pollution translates into an estimated $40 billion in annual costs to the nation in health care alone. The U.S. has 5% of the world's population, but accounts for 50% of the total motor vehicle miles driven. Walk or bike for close errands or whenever possible. Consolidate errands and call ahead before shopping to cut down on unnecessary driving. Avoid situations such as drive-through lines where your car must idle for long periods. If unavoidable, shut off engine while waiting. Encourage your staff to travel to and from work without a single occupancy vehicle (SOV). Offer financial incentives such as free or subsidized bus passes, and the equivalent dollar amount for other non-SOV commuters (bicyclists, walkers, carpoolers, vanpoolers). Assist employees in arranging carpools and vanpools, and alter parking rates to provide free or reduced parking charges and more convenient parking locations for these commuters. Provide a Guaranteed Ride Program for employees. This program assures that a commuter can get a taxi or other lift at the employer's expense in case of an emergency or unexpected event. This program removes one of the major obstacles to employing carpooling and results in minimal cost to the employer because few ever need to use the guarantee. Allow flexible hours so employees can travel during non- rush-hour times. Consider opportunities for employees to "telecommute" from their homes to a telework center. Provide secure and, if possible, enclosed parking for bicycles. Provide shower and locker facilities or contract with an athletic club for use of their facilities. Make sure your tires are properly pressured and your vehicle is tuned. Drive as though every gallon of gasoline and every mile driven matters. top Resources Organizations American Lung Association Car Care and Clean Air The American Lung Association 1740 Broadway NY, NY 10019 212.315.8700 www.lungusa.org/air/ envcarcare.html California Service Station and Automobile Repair Association Clean Air Car Tips 1202 Grant Avenue, Suite B1 Novato, CA 94945 415.892.1243 http://www.cssara.org/ CONSUMER/carcaretips.html EPA -Transportation www.epa.gov/epahome/trans.htm Information on the environmental impacts of transportation GreenerCars.com http://www.greenercars.org/ indexplus.html National Association of Fleet Administrators 100 Wood Avenue South, Suite 310 Iselin, NJ 08830 732.494.8100 www.nafa.org top Catalogues/Books Consumer Action Handbook S.
