Whenever possible, purchase only non-hazardous supplies for cleaning, landscaping, and maintaining your office. If you must purchase a hazardous product, buy only the amount you will use and follow directions carefully. Before disposing of the container, use up the entire amount or give it to someone who will. If the hazardous product cannot be used up or recycled, take it to a hazardous waste disposal facility. Check with your local fire department to find out the location of such a facility. Purchase toxic-free magic markers, pens, and inks to minimize toxic waste. Try switching to soy-based and other non-toxic inks for your foundation's printing needs. Use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones. Use unbleached, non-claycoated paper for your office requirements, and unbleached filters for your coffee maker. Use latex and water-based paints. Avoid aerosol sprays. Switch from chemical pesticides for insect control to one of the many effective, natural alternatives. Use environmentally friendly cleaning substitutes. Mop floors with a solution of 1 part vinegar to 32 parts water; use club soda to polish. Polish furniture with a solution of 1-tsp. lemon oil and 1 pint mineral oil. Clean toilets with a solution of water and baking soda. Remove stubborn rings and lime with white vinegar or pumice stone. Clean windows with a solution of 2-tsp. vinegar with 1 qt. water and apply with old newspaper. top |
