Look for long distance phone companies (i.e., Working Assets Long Distance) that print their monthly statements on recycled paper and on both sides of the page. When choosing a personal or company credit card, consider an affinity card, which will ensure that participating environmental nonprofits get a portion of each purchase and processing fee. VISA, MasterCard, and Working Assets all have credit card affinity programs. Try to find copy shops that will stock recycled paper or are willing to use recycled paper that you supply. For landscaping needs, try to find companies that use few or no chemicals for lawn and flower care. Office Supply Products The process of bleacking paper creates dioxin, a deadly toxin which is often dumped into waterways. Paper is the most visible of office resources and the one where foundations can make a daily impact on the environment. Whenever possible, use recycled, 100% post-consumer content, non-chlorine bleach paper. Consider kenaf or other alternatives to wood-based products. Most importantly, get the facts on alternative choices. Several excellent books on paper are listed in the resource section. When buying office products such as scissors, rulers, file folders, and labels, look for products with recycled content and packaging. Several of the national mail order and office supply chains, i.e., Staples, Viking Office Products, and Reliable Office Products, carry a variety of green office products. top |
