About Mohonk Mountain House

Mohonk, a National Historic Landmark, offers thousands of acres of beautiful scenery, hiking and nature walks. Tucked away at the top of the Shawangunk Ridge is Lake Mohonk, a half-mile-long, sixty-foot-deep mountain lake. Rock formations rise majestically above the water, and the natural surroundings remain virtually untouched except for the northwest corner of the lake, where a sprawling Victorian castle stands guard. Mohonk Mountain House stands at the head of a magnificent 24,000-acre nature preserve, located in the Hudson Valley region of New York State, only 90 miles north of New York City. Mohonk has been owned and operated by members of the Smiley family since 1869. The establishment of the resort as a healthful retreat and the Smiley family’s conservationist interests have had a significant influence on the architecture, flora and fauna of Mohonk. Seeing themselves not as owners of the land but as caretakers, the Smileys have always sought to protect the land.

In Mohonk’s continuing commitment to be “the same, only better,” Mohonk has begun construction of the Mohonk Spa and Fitness Center, a new 30,000-square-foot wing built with an environmentally friendly design that will house a full-size fitness center and an indoor swimming pool, opening late July. There has also been a revitalization of the historic Brook Farm. Using organic farming methods (including compost from the Mountain House), the farm produces squash, beans, cucumbers, carrots, greens, tomatoes and more for Mohonk’s kitchen.
