Culture of the Retreat

Because this gathering is a retreat, rather than simply an annual meeting, it is designed to contribute to a sense of community, provide time for collaborative discussions and enhance understanding and communication among colleagues and grantmakers. As such, it is a casual, participatory place where we can challenge and be challenged by each other in a manner that is respectful of a diversity of opinions, cultures, interests and backgrounds. Thoughtful, lively dialogue is encouraged, and fundraising is strongly discouraged.

The retreat should demonstrate the values we hold as environmental grantmakers, by encouraging shared transportation; printing with recycled, non-toxic materials; serving sustainable foods; utilizing alternative energy sources; and staying mindful of our impact on the planet.
