WINISK RIVER TRIP
Motorized Canoe Trip between First Nation Settlements
Dates of Trip: September
15–20
The land of the First Nations in Northern Ontario is one of the last
true adventure vacation spots in the world. It is more than a destination.
It is a lifetime opportunity to enjoy the nobleness of simplicity and
to be absorbed by a culture that has existed since before recorded history. The
Northern Ontario Aboriginal Experience… beyond your imagination.
Your
adventure begins in Ottawa where you will board a float plane for a
four-hour journey north to the remote native community of Webequie,
situated along the Winisk River in the Boreal Forest. Upon arrival,
you will be met by your hosts and transported to your cabin accommodations.
You will lunch on traditional foods and visit with local elders while
experiencing the river aboard a motorized freighter canoe. After breakfasting
over an open camp fire, day two will include a community tour of Webequie
and a short plane ride to Peawanuck, located in the sub arctic land.
Upon arrival in Peawanuck, you will be transported by boat to your
overnight
tent accommodations along the tundra in Polar Bear Provincial Park
where whales, caribou, ptarmigan and polar bears thrive. On day three,
you
will hike Limestone Island with its 60 foot cliffs. Here you will experience
the remoteness of the Hudson Bay south shore. After breakfast on day
four, you will travel by float plane to the most northerly community
-- Port Severn. Enroute, you will fly along the coast to search for
polar bears. Upon arrival in Port Severn, you will continue to travel
by boat
to a Cree Village where local elders will prepare a traditional dinner
for you. On day five, you will return to Ottawa aboard our scheduled
float plane.
The Winisk River Trip includes four nights accommodation;
air travel from Ottawa to Webequie; breakfast, lunch and dinners, site-seeing
in
Webequie, Peawanuck and Fort Severn; and full land and marine interpretive
programs with native guides while in Peawanuck and Webequie.
Note: Participants
are expected to bring sleeping bags, water resistant footwear, and
