| 8/12/09 - 8/12/09 | Funder Dialogue on the Role of Philanthropy in Advancing Sustainability in Higher Education
EGA, in partnership with the Funders Workgroup for Sustainable Production and Consumption, invites you to participate in a special funders dialogue on the role of philanthropy in advancing sustainability in higher education on August 12, 1:00-5:00pm at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, Illinois. This will be followed by a dinner at a local restaurant.
In February 2009 a group of funders met in Washington, DC (prior to and during the EGA Federal Policy Briefing) to discuss climate change, environmental education and sustainability issues and how higher education plays a role as both leaders and mentors for the future of the country. As follow-up to the February meeting, this gathering will focus on exploring “game-changing” initiatives, ideas for collaboration and high-leverage investments to move toward incorporating sustainability principles and actions in higher education.
Please join the dialogue whether you were able to participate in the February discussions or not. To register for the meeting visit www.regonline.com/63382_754791J
The funder discussion is purposefully scheduled the day before the third annual ACUPCC (American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment) conference August 13-14. You are invited to attend the 2009 ACUPCC Summit which brings together senior level college and university executives for learning and collaboration on addressing the climate challenge. This year’s sessions will focus on leading and supporting climate action planning in operations and academics, including: a deep exploration of leading transformational change efforts facilitated by organizational learning expert Dr. Peter Senge; presentations by top speakers as Janine Benyus, Founder of the Biomimicry Institute; Richard Fedrizzi, Chairman of the US Green Building Council; energy entrepreneur T. Boone Pickens (invited); and, panels focused on international perspectives on higher education for sustainability, and funding and financing sustainability initiatives.

| 1/21/10 - 1/21/10 | Community-Based Renewable Energy Webinar
Renewable energy will be key in the fight against global warming. It can also help revitalize rural and urban economies. Most renewable energy projects are done by corporate investors, but enabling citizens and communities to invest can spread the benefits of the new energy economy. The revenue from renewable energy projects has provided significant benefits to smaller farmers. Community energy also offers a tangible way for funders to engage in ADRESSING global warming, from local projects to international collaboratives. But the success of community energy is highly dependent on policy. Find out what is being done and what needs to happen to make this a reality.

(Note: if you attend just the pre conference event on May 28, you do not need to pay ANY registration fee)
The growing importance of the European Union, and the emerging influence of new environmental legislation arising from Brussels, has an impact on American environmental and funding initiatives. Progressive regulations, established in Europe, are affecting issues of concern to EGA members- from environmental health to biofuels. At the same time, the face of European philanthropy itself is changing. Europe is witnessing a tremendous growth of foundations, as well as increased cross-border cooperation and involvement with global issues - within Europe as well as outside. New types of donors and approaches to philanthropy are emerging - and seriously impacting- the international grantmaking arena. These new donors, as well as experienced funders are increasingly looking to engage in learning networks in Europe and beyond, collaborative funding schemes, and international networking opportunities.
Whether you are a domestic or internationally-focused grantmaker now is the time to learn more about the exciting changes happening in Europe. Join EGA members, already engaged in this forum, as we meet and strategize with our colleagues overseas. This is perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity to join a formal EGA-led delegation to the European Foundation Centre's Annual Conference!
Highlights include:
*A special orientation led by EGA members
*Celebrate and support the launch of the European Foundation Centre's own environmental affinity group: Environmental Funders Europe
*Special workshops led by both EGA and EFC colleagues about climate change and consumption issues
*A special reception and pre-conference event for EGA and EFC environmental funders ( if you attend just the pre conference event on May 28, you do not need to pay ANY registration fee)

| 11/12/07 - 11/13/07 | Southeast Climate Action—Challenges and Opportunities: A Funders Meeting
Agenda-in-brief: Opening dinner and reception (November 12), followed by 8 a.m.-3 p.m. meeting on November 13. ** BOOK YOUR HOTEL NOW ** We have a room block at the Boar's Head Inn, (434) 296-2181 and the cutoff date is October 20. The block of rooms is reserved under "Southeast Climate Funders." The rate is $179 per night (excluding taxes) for the evening of November 12.
Meeting Vision:
With more than 2,000 miles of threatened coastline, diverse forest habitat, and significant concentrations of biodiversity, the Southeast United States is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of global warming. While other regions have taken proactive steps to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, the Southeast has been slow to respond to the climate crisis. But in recent months, conditions have started to change. Environmental funders are increasingly turning their attention to the Southeast, where advocates are building a groundswell of support for action on climate. Now key states, such as Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina, are poised to become leaders on these issues.
As states, localities, and climate advocates grapple with strategies to reduce carbon emissions—from the passage of renewable and energy efficiency portfolio standards to the launch of statewide multi-sector climate action planning processes—the time is ripe for change. Increasingly, opportunities that can move the South closer to a clean energy economy—and set the stage for regional support—are emerging.
The proposed in-person, grantmakers meeting will provide a forum where interested foundations and donors can discuss a portfolio of funding opportunities, and strategize around climate action agendas in the Southeast. Specifically, this regional meeting will provide an opportunity for funders to:
Gain a greater understanding of both what’s happening and what’s needed for success on climate-related initiatives at the local, state, and regional levels;
Identify immediate funding needs and opportunities, with special attention paid to Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida;
Share information regarding on-going foundation efforts; and
Identify current and future priorities and needs.
This event is sponsored by the following foundations and affinity groups: WestWind Foundation, Environmental Grantmakers Association, and the Consultative Group on Biological Diversity.

| 11/14/06 - 11/15/06 | Midwest Policy Briefing for Funders: The Opportunity and Jeopardy of Biofuels
** NOTE: This briefing is for funders only. ** REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Click on the link and call to reserve your room, too. **
November 14: 4:00 9:00 p.m. (will include dinner)
November 15: 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Co-sponsored by:
The Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA)
The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders (SAFSF)
Meeting Background
At the intersection of water, energy, and agriculture issues in the Midwest is the new but rapidly growing field of biofuels: transportation fuels made from vegetation, not petroleum. Interest in biofuels has surged along with the call for independence from Middle East oil. Midwest farmers see the expansion of energy crops as a new source of income for a sector that finds it harder and harder to make ends meet. Depending on how biofuels are developed and which energy sources corn, soybeans, prairie grasses or other - massive growth in this area could bring environmental, economic, and community benefits or it could place many systems, including freshwater ecosystems at significant risk. Success in taking these new energy sources to scale will hinge on designing new conversion methods that use a diversity of raw plant materials in a mix, and developing an array of crops grown near refineries that can be harvested in different seasons, providing a steady year-round supply.
The enthusiasm for biofuels among national policymakers and big agriculture leaves many questions unanswered. Where do smaller farms fit into this picture? Could energy crop production shift overseas, as have products from soybeans to roses? Might food production be displaced by energy crop production? Will we leave room for biodiversity? What about other alternative energy methods?
Interest in biofuels is growing nationally - as recent policy initiatives in Washington State, Louisiana, Hawaii, New York, and California all show. Government policies and research priorities that will influence how these industries develop are well underway, and foundations are beginning to identify ways to foster a sustainable energy industry.
This meeting will afford opportunities to hear from a few experts and engage in lots of peer-to-peer learning. Though the focus is on serving the needs of regional funders, those funders from outside the Midwest are encouraged to come to the center of biofuels activity to learn about what's going on there, both among funders and in the broader community, and what the future may hold in store for their regions.

| 6/06/06 - 6/08/06 | Funder Convening on Globalization: New Perspectives, Key Strategies, Success Stories and Funder Opportunities
REGISTER NOW :: CLICK ON THE LINK FOR MORE INFO:: BOOK YOUR HOTEL AT THE SPECIAL RATE ::
The critical issues surrounding globalization have changed dramatically since many of us began working in this arena ten years ago. We have better data on the impacts, from local to international arenas; there has been a new surge of successful political opposition, especially in Latin America where more than 80% of the population have elected governments opposed to the U.S.-led economic model. And the list of successful campaigns to transform globalization is growing longer by the day, much of that list supported by U.S. foundations and other funders.
Join a community of funders from diverse fields and perspectives to analyze global trends and the evolving discourse around globalization, to share and celebrate successful civil society strategies, and to discuss how funders can use our resources most effectively to support positive change in these most fundamental driving forces, both at home and abroad.
We will begin with a keynote dinner on the evening of June 6. Our core program will consist of a series of participatory conversations around key strategic themes, each beginning with a *state-of-the-debate* presentation delivered by a leading analyst. Veteran funders will then share their own experiences and lead an interactive discussion to develop deeper shared analysis about trends and strategies, globally and at state and local levels within the US. Discussions will highlight successful initiatives and alternatives, and explore opportunities for funders to become more involved (and, as appropriate, collectively involved) in supporting civil society initiatives that address key challenges in today's world.
Discussion sessions will cover the following themes:
Mapping the global economy, and exploring terrains of intervention
The changing discourse on globalization: Where is it now and where is it going?
Revisiting trade, poverty and developmentŠ with new data
Globalization of human rights: Breakthroughs and continuing challenges
International cooperation vs. global domination, for security in an insecure world
Bringing it home: Local organizing in a global context
Funder Opportunities: What does it all mean; how do we continue moving forward?

| 5/19/05 - 6/29/05 | EGA Salons for the Future
EGA brings to its membership five regional Salons for the Future. Our goal is to create a shared space for dialogue, critical engagement and the generation of ideas about the strategic future of the environmental movement. Through provocative pre-dinner presentations and focused group discussion, we will brainstorm positive visions for how our funding, and the field in general, can be even more effective. EGA will publish a report synthesizing the ideas that emerge at each salon as well as the needs, opportunities and recommendations for translating these conversations into action - and the Salons will inform visioning plenaries entitled "Crafting a Positive Environmental Future and Setting an Agenda for EGA" taking place at the EGA Fall Retreat in September.
We invite you to join your colleagues for an intimate dinner conversation to discuss the future of the environmental movement. Come hear leaders with varying viewpoints - from the environmental field and other movements - share their visions for how our movement can have greater impact and effect change. Following the speakers' provocations and a hearty round of Q&A, dinner will be served. Conversation will continue through dinner at each table, facilitated by your EGA colleagues. Engage and grapple with the visions presented as well as your own goals, strategies and assumptions. What does success mean for the environmental movement? What are we doing right, what are we doing wrong, and what other actions should we take to achieve our goals? What is the most strategic role for funding the next generation of environmental change? Each salon will be a groundbreaking opportunity to examine our shared agenda and momentum for tackling the opportunities and challenges we face. ** CLICK ON THE LINK to get to the Member Area to register OR nonmembers can call our office directly for assistance, 212.812.4260. **

| 1/25/05 - 1/31/05 | Funders Delegation to the 5th World Social Forum
The World Social Forum (WSF) is an annual gathering of progressive community organizers, academics, activists, and socially-responsible business leaders that has grown in size and significance since its launch in 2001.
Created to provide an open platform to discuss social strategies and alternative models of globalization, committed to the belief that "another world is possible", the WSF is a unique space for sharing ideas and strengthening alliances among social movements, mass organizations, and civil society organizations from around the world.
In 2001 the forum attracted nearly 20,000 participants. In Porto Alegre in 2003, and in Mumbai in 2004, over 100,000 participated in its activities. Parallel meetings of parliamentarians, educators, small farmers, women and youth have contributed to the forum's success, adding to the historical weight and significance of this distinctive event. The Funders Network on Trade and Globalization has organized delegations to the WSF over the last three years, facilitating the participation of more than 130 donors, foundation board members, program officers and foundation staff in forum activities. FNTG is again bringing together a delegation, this year with organizing support from a number of sister funder affinity groups including the Environmental Grantmakers Association, the Women Donors Network, Grantmakers without Borders, International Funders of Indigenous Peoples, International Human Rights Funders Group and Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees.

| 5/17/04 - 5/18/04 | Funder Briefing on Paper and Paper Mill Tour
The Sustainable Consumption and Production Funders and the Sustainable Forestry Funders invite you to a unique convening that will combine briefings and hands-on learning focused on the production and consumption of paper, one of the largest contributors to global and local environmental problems. This event will feature briefings from industry (producers and buyers) and NGO experts, as well as a guided tour of the Madison Paper Co., a state of the art paper mill outside of Chicago that produces 350 tons per day of mostly recycled printing paper. We'll explore the issue of paper from both the consumption and the production side and learn about successes, obstacles, and new developments in sustainable paper. The story of an emerging coalition of over 50 NGO’s working on the paper issue will bring home the role funders can play.

| 12/01/03 - 12/03/03 | Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Funders Forum
The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders Group invite you to join them for a two day meeting in the Bay Area, with a program that builds on previous conversations and provides plenty of opportunities to learn about agricultural policy and hands-on programs, share ideas with other funders, and see how urban-rural connections work in the Bay Area.
Keynote speakers include Congressman Sam Farr (invited) and Craig Cox, Executive Director of the Soil and Water Conservation Society. Through his role on the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Farr has supported a variety of initiatives to make agriculture more sustainable and promote a healthy diet for all Americans. Craig Cox’s stints with the National Academy of Sciences Board on Agriculture, USDA, U.S. EPA, and as a congressional staffer have made him well versed in the policy dimensions of agriculture and sustainability. These presentations will keynote a funder conversation about how federal policy can promote a more sustainable agriculture. Other aspects of the program include lunch at Chez Panisse, where we’ll hear about programs to bring healthy, locally grown food in the Berkeley Public Schools, and a visit to the new year-round San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers Market another local initiative to match farmers’ economic need to sell direct and urban dwellers’ need for fresh, healthy food.
This is a funders-only meeting
