EGA Events| 9/23/10 - 9/23/10 | Get Off Your Assets: Investing in Human Rights
Registration is required by September 21st. No fee.
A program in Philanthropy New York’s DECISION MAKERS series, presented with Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA) and International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG).
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: The program will be of interest to trustees, CEOs and finance officers, as well as program officers.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
8:30 to 9:00 AM Check-in and coffee
9:00 to 11:00 AM Program
When we think of philanthropy we usually focus on grants – Philanthropy New York’s more than 280 member institutions award more than $3.9 billion annually to local, national, and international charitable organizations. However, too few focus on the financial investments that make these grants possible – our members hold assets in the neighborhood of $73 billion. Nationally, philanthropic assets are more than $500 billion.
This session will address the ways that these assets can be used to add value to grantmaking and philanthropic purpose, meeting standards of fiduciary duty and investment performance expectations.
The session will begin with two brief presentations by foundation executive directors who are now working with their boards and finance committees to harmonize investment management with philanthropic mission. We will then hear from two investment specialists who will, in plain English not financese, speak about the investment landscape for climate and water, in all asset classes and including proxy voting. These issues were selected because climate and water are cross cutting issues, affecting environment, human rights, food systems, health -- virtually all areas of philanthropic interest.
PRESENTERS
