Green Procurement Guides

  • An Environmentally Preferable Procurement Guide is offered by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
  • THe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines are available on their website.

Energy Conservation

  • "The Whole Building Design to Electric Lighting Controls" is a publication that reviews the basics of automated controls, which types to use in which situations and provides a list of sources.
  • Wattstopper is one of the leading manufacturers of occupancy sensors and offers a brochure that describes different types of sensors, applications, and wiring.

  • The US Department of Energy offers a handy guide to different types of lights (known in the industry as lamps) and their uses.

Sustainable Food and Beverages

  • The Local Harvest is a useful resource for finding locally produced, organic, and specialty farm products throughout the United states.
  • The Sustainable Table offers an "Eat Well Guide" that can link you to information about healthy food in the United States and Canada.
  • Food Routes provides an online interactive map that can help you find locally available food.
  • Slow Food USA has more than 150 chapters across the country that maintain contacts witih local food producers and venues that value and serve local products.
  • Chef's Collaborative is a network of chefs across the country that supports local food and farming and artisan and sustainable cuisine.
  • Green Restaurant Association lists eateries that are taking proactive steps to promote sustainability.  They also provide printable suggestion cards that encourage your favorite restaurants to become 'green' certified.
  • Fair Trade Certified.  Learn more about this program for ensuring that social justice is factored into food production and marketing.
  • Fair Trade Federation lists organic and fiar trade suppliers. 

Waste Reduction

  • Recycling:  To find out about local recycling options, enter your zip code at www.earth911.org.
  • Recycling Coordinators:  Some counties and cities have a recycling coordinator who can assist with your efforts.  To find one in your community, look in the Government section of your phone directory, most likely under public works
  • Recycling Contracts:  The California Integrated Waste Management Board has useful sample contracts and tips about recycling.
  • Electronics Recycling: The Electronics Industry Association maintains a list of options to recycle electronics, searchable by state.
  • Composting:  for an intorduction to composting visit the EPA composting page or view this composting guide.

Carbon Calculators and Offsets

  • Visit the website associated with the documentary An Inconvenient Truth or the World Resource Institute's Safe Climate, Sound Business project to calculate your emissions.
  • EcoBusiness Links has compiled a directory with links to carbon-offset programs, including information on price per ton, types of projects used in the offsets and certification credentials.
  • The Green Office (see under vendors) offers a full online carbon-offsetting service, which will help you calclulate your "carbon liability" and offset your emissions through the purchase of Gold Standard Certified Verified Emission Reductions.
  • The Center for Resource Solutions Green-e Certification program certifies renewable energy credits (RECs) a.k.a. Green Tags and allows you to purchase renewable energy for your organization.

Low-Carbon Travel

  • A Better World Club provides nationwide roadside service as well as travel-planning service (each reservation includes carbon offsets), insurance services, auto maintenance discounts and bicycle roadsode assistance. The organization will meet AAA rates for new customers and it donates 1 percent of revinues to environmental advocacy.
  • The National Public Transit Datablase is a directory of public transit agencies organized by region.
  • The League of American Bicyclists "Rider Resources" includes a search function to help you find local resources such as bicycle safety courses and local clubs.

Event Planning

  • Bluegreen Meetings offers excellent green meeting-planning resources.
  • Flying Colors offers video production and distribution services, including live streaming of events.  They are the producer of the annual Bioneers conference, which broadcasts plenary sessions to satellite conferences all over the country.
  • Green Hotels Association provides a state-by-state list of member hotels.
  • Project Planet's Conserving for tomorrow program helps hotels adopt energy and water conservation strategies.
